After spending time researching and testing 70+ dehumidifiers available on the market today, we found that the Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier is the best of the best.

Here are the 5 best dehumidifiers in 2023

Keep reading to find out why we made this choice.

What is a Dehumidifier?

Before we get started, if you are not aware of dehumidifiers, here's the definition of this device:

Dehumidifiers are helpful household appliances which help in the maintenance of preferable and healthy relative humidity levels. Their main job is to cleanse the air and to get rid of excess moisture preventing molds and mildew, bacteria, dust mites and other organisms from growing.

How Do Dehumidifiers Work?

Dehumidifier works by pulling excess moisture/water vapor from the air, then filtering cool and dry air back into the indoor environment. It's a simple process, but does really help improve the air quality of your living space.

Benefits of a Dehumidifier

There are a lot of benefits when it comes to keeping a dehumidifier running in your house. Here are some reasons why every homeowner should own a dehumidifier:

  • Dehumidifier helps get rid of musty smell caused by hidden mold growth in your house
  • Dehumidifier helps prevent mold and mildew, dust mites, harmful particles from growing and spreading in your home. That is very beneficial for you and your family members, especially children, elderly people and people with allergies and asthma.
  • Dehumidifier helps you save money on your electricity bills by assisting your HVAC units to work more efficiently. Imagining you are living in a humid climate and you need to run your air conditioner all the time for lowering down the indoor humidity level, a dehumidifier will be an alternative to do the job with lower energy costs.

Let's dig deeper into it!

Things To Consider Before You Purchase Your Own Dehumidifier

1. Types of Dehumidifiers

Throughout our research work, we found that dehumidifiers come in all shapes and types. There is not a one size fits all when it comes to removing moisture from the air.

Best Dehumidifier for Basement Reviews

We also found that the dehumidifier ratings are not all the same for each dehumidifier, especially when they are the same approx. size and handle the same amount of pints per day moisture removal.

As you see by our quick comparison chart, there are differences. In this section, we will talk about the different types of dehumidifiers you can buy:

  • Desiccant dehumidifiers - the word desiccant may be a difficult word to say and use but all it means is that the dehumidifier uses any practical substance that can absorb moisture. If you need a reference to fully understand that definition, think of those gel packs that re-included in many boxes your products are shipped in. Those packs absorb moisture, so your product doesn’t get humidity damage during shipping. This type of dehumidifier is specially designed for small spaces (for example, a closet or a document cabinet...)
  • Refrigerant-based dehumidifiers (Compressor dehumidifiers) - A lot easier to say and understand. All these types of dehumidifiers do is blow the humid air over a cold surface like refrigerated pipes. The cold surface turns the moist air into condensation which then drips into your water bucket or continuously drains through your drain hose. All dehumidifiers reviewed here are compressor-based type.

Also, there are three basic styles of dehumidifiers. Which one you purchase depends on your needs and preferences. Here they are:

  • Small portable dehumidifiers - these units are made for smaller spaces, usually under 500 square feet. They sit on a table, night stand, etc., and have small water reservoirs which require a lot of emptying. They also usually only have one button operations though varieties do exist depending on the size. They are great for bathrooms, laundry rooms, baby rooms and small bedrooms.
  • Larger portable dehumidifiers - these are the one similar and including those we reviewed here. They take large amounts of moisture out of the air per day and have a lot more controls and other features. They are portable as they have wheels to transport them from room to room. They are also not so large where they dominate the room. You can pick them up by their handles and move them as well. Besides, if you're looking for an answer for the question what size dehumidifier for basement, consider using 50 to 70 pint dehumidifiers.
  • Whole house dehumidifiers - these are not easily moved and can be quite large. These units hook-up to your existing furnace duct systems and dehumidify every room in your house. Unlike the portable models, they can be a little complicated to set up. They are not easy to move either and you may need help getting them into position

The key to remember is that each style may have a variety of designs and preferred locations. Some whole house units are made to hang from your attic’s rafters.

It is wise to analyze your home and how you want it dehumidified before you go out and purchase your next dehumidifier.

2. Rule of Thumb

When you go out looking for your new dehumidifier there are some rule of thumb standards that will help guide your search.

These are not hard and fast standards that are written in stone but more of a flexible guide to make sure you do not overbuy.

You may see a chart similar to the one right below. You need to take that chart with a large grain of salt. The reasons for this will be listed right below the chart

Air Condition

500 sq. ft.

1000 sq. ft.

1500 sq. ft

2000 sq. ft

2500 sq. ft

Moderately damp (musty smell)

10 pints

14 pints

18 pints

22 pints

26 pints

Very damp (musty smell & damp spots)

12 pints

17 pints

22 pints

27 pints

32 pints

Wet (sweating walls & feels wet)

14 pints

20 pints

26 pints

32 pints

38 pints

Extremely wet (wet floors)

16 pints

23 pints

30 pints

37 pints

44 pints

Keep in mind that this is a very subjective standard. The major problem with this chart is that dehumidifiers do not come in those pint capacity sizes. They come in sizes 30, 40, 50 & 70 with some exceptions to that rule.

Another reason is that this chart was probably compiled under testing done in ideal conditions with few situations actually tested. The results may not reflect your situation.

Also, the chart provides no consideration for the cubic feet per minute a dehumidifier fan pulls in as it is operating. This is a too important factor to ignore and leaving it out distorts the results.

While those numbers can give you an idea, here are some rules to further help you find the right dehumidifier for your home:

  • Living in a humid climate - add 10 pints
  • More than 2 people sharing the space - add 5 pints
  • Too many doors and windows in the room - add 5 pints
  • If a washer & dryer are close - add 5 pints

3. Why Use a 70-pint Dehumidifier

It is a good question considering the many different types of dehumidifiers on the market today. When searching for a new dehumidifier you should consider a 70-pint dehumidifier for your home.

There are several reasons for this:

  • Smaller models - Not every space in your home is going to be small. To protect your home you need a dehumidifier that can handle those large spaces. The smaller models are for small rooms
  • Features - the 70-pint models all have the features you need and want on a dehumidifier. You can easily access them through control panels.
  • Speed - a 70-pint dehumidifier removes moisture from the air faster than a 50 or 30-pint model. You get relief from the humidity a lot quicker.
  • Quantity - over a 24-hour period, a 70-pint dehumidifier will remove almost 3 pints of moisture from your room per hour. A 50-pint model works at just over 2 pints per hour and a 30-pint unit is only 1 ¼ pints per hour.
  • Energy efficient - in tests conducted, a 70-pint dehumidifier used less energy overall to dehumidify your indoor air than either a 50 or 30-pint unit.
  • Maintenance - a 70-pint dehumidifier does not run as long as the smaller versions. This means there is less wear and tear on the internal parts of the 70-pint unit. The larger dehumidifier should last you longer than have fewer repairs than the smaller dehumidifiers.

IMPORTANT: Dehumidifier Standards

The two main standards that make the best dehumidifier are energy efficiency and the capacity per day (according to the U.S Department of Energy). Therefore, a fully functioning 70 pint dehumidifier with an Energy Star certified label meets these standards perfectly.

That's why we recommend you purchase a portable 70 pint dehumidifier, or at least 50 pint unit for the best performance.

Of course, you shouldn’t buy a 70-pint dehumidifier if you only have small rooms to remove moisture. You need to get the unit that fits your house design and your budget.

If you have a large room, basement or attic area, then a 50 to 70-pint dehumidifier should handle the task quite well. Regarding the features which make it work best for basements, consider the auto drain function, water tank capacity and energy efficiency (most of the dehumidifiers listed below are Energy Star certified).

Our reviews will reveal what is the best 70 pint dehumidifier on the market in 2023.

Reviews of the Best Dehumidifier in 2023

#1. Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier (Frigidaire FFAD7033R1) - The Best 70 Pint Dehumidifier

Frigidaire FFAD7033R1 Dehumidifier Review Best 70 Pint

When it comes to removing humidity from your larger rooms, look no further than this top dehumidifier. Not only does it remove up to 70 pints a day every day, it handles rooms up to 1400 square feet.

Then when you place it near the right floor drain, it can run 24 hours a day without needing to be emptied. For those times you can’t run it all day, there is a water tank ready and willing to hold 13.1 pints of water.

With its automatic shut off and full tank alert, you should not have to worry about spills and overflows. A pull-out handle makes relocating this device simple and very easy to do. Just pull the handle up and lift. The rest will be up to you.

Also, the electronic controls are located on the top of this dehumidifier, right in front of the handle. Programming it to do the job you want will not be complicated. Plus, this device should work in temperatures as low as 41 degrees F. Perfect for those cooler yet moist days.

The LCD display makes sure you can see the level of humidity in your room with ease. This device is very energy efficient as it is Energy Star certified. Unlike its cousin FFAP7033T1, if you want to use the draining feature of this dehumidifier, you need to buy a separate condensate pump.

One thing our study showed was that this dehumidifier was flexible, versatile and handle all the tasks asked of it with ease. Its 24-hour timer and other features makes it a very convenient dehumidifier to have in your home

#2. hOmeLabs 4000 Sq. Ft. Dehumidifier (hOmeLabs HME020031N) - The Best Dehumidifier for Mold and Mildew

hOmeLabs 4000 Sq Ft Dehumidifier 70 Pint Energy Star

Homelabs dehumidifiers are always recommended by HVAC experts. Depending on the size of your home, we found that this 70-pint dehumidifier has the best results in rooms measuring between 2500 and 4000 square feet. Its 6-liter water tank takes longer to fill so you do not have to empty it as often. After all, you have more important things to do with your time.

It is easy to move this approx. 15 x 11 x 24-inch, 40-pound dehumidifier. 4 castor wheels roll nice and smoothly across most surfaces. Plus, its built-in handles keep you in control as you move the dehumidifier from room to room.

Some of its best features are the touch control panel. You just need a fingertip to solve your hot and sticky home issue. Then its automatic functions save you time, energy and stress. It can restart on its own, shut itself off and when it gets cold, it will turn on the auto defrost function. This function plays a role in protecting evaporator coils and preventing wasted energy.

Other features like the 24-hour timer make it simple for you to operate. You can choose when the unit turns on and off. Also, you are in control of the humidity setting. You get to choose between 35% and 85% moisture levels. How comfortable you are is up to your preference.

While it has an auto defrost function, it is best to operate it in room temperatures not lower than 41 degrees F. and hotter than 95 degrees F. With our research work, we did find that the auto-defrost was up to its task.

Plus, the auto-stop function made sure the dehumidifier did not create a mess in your home. Power outages were not an issue with its re-start function. You do not have to do any extra work to get the dehumidifier running again.

#3. Ivation 70 Pint Energy Star Dehumidifier (Ivation IVALDH70PW) - The Best Dehumidifier for Apartment

Ivation 70 Pint Energy Star Dehumidifier

The key to buying a great dehumidifier is the number of features that come with the unit. Since this dehumidifier is like all the rest, it is a 70-pint model, you need to go to the features to see what else the unit offers you and your home.

One great feature is the LCD touch screen control panel. Here is where you can access the 24-hour timer, the humidity level setting, fan speeds and get any alerts you need to know about.

Along with those features, this unit is not without its automatic functions. The unit has auto-restart, stop and defrost. But what is more important is its 6’ long power cord. This gives you location flexibility when you need it most.

The dehumidifier only measures roughly 15 x 11 x 23 inches in size and weighs about 40 pounds, but you still need the castor wheel to move it to the right location. The tough wheels should handle most surfaces with ease.

For best results, you need to stay within its certified rating. The unit works best in those apartments measuring up to 4500 square feet. This makes it a little too large for small rooms and a perfect choice for apartments. Its larger bucket size doesn’t mean you can’t use the continuous draining feature. Just attach your standard garden hose to the outlet and you are good to go.

In our research, we found that the touch screen control panel was ideal for any living situation. It gives you simple access to all the features including the 24-hour timer. When you want to have your home dehumidified before you return, this is a good unit to use.

#4. TOSOT 50 Pint Dehumidifier - The Best Dehumidifier for Basement

TOSOT 70 Pint Dehumidifier, Energy Star Certified

One of the best features that comes with this 50-pint dehumidifier (previously 70 pint) is its spill proof water bucket. It may only hold 1 gallon of water but avoiding the possible messy clean-up is worth an extra trip or two to the bathtub or sink.

Of course, if you do not want to make any trips to the sink, you can hook up your 3/4” garden hose and direct the moisture directly to your drain. For best results, you want to place this in a room measuring up to but not larger than 4500 square feet.

Also, this is a basement dehumidifier with drain hose (not included), so it may not handle your smaller rooms in the upstairs living area. It may be the best dehumidifier for basement on the market today. That award is up to you to decide.

This dehumidifier is not hard to operate. 6 buttons on the control panel provide you with access to all of its features. Then the LED digital display gives you clear and accurate information. It also has a 2 to 4-hour sleep timer for better control and energy efficiency.

Other attractive features include multiple fan speeds, humidity level settings, and continuous operation function. This lets you keep the dehumidifier on all the time. Depending on what fan speed you set this unit, the motor should be very quiet. The loudest it gets is roughly 52 decibels.

What makes this dehumidifier special, according to our work on this dehumidifier, is its size. Measuring 14.8 x 11.4 x 24 inches and weighing 51 pounds, the unit is still easy to maneuver on its castor wheels. We can’t say enough about all the features as we found that they protect your investment and the unit.

LG High Efficiency PuriCare Black 70-Pint Dehumidifier Review

This unit’s dark black color will help it slip into the shadows and do its duty without fanfare or being noticed by anyone. With the ability to remove up to 70 pints of moisture per day you can use this dehumidifier in a variety of rooms. Those rooms square footage should not exceed 2000.

On top of the device, you will find all the controls you need to access the different features. There are buttons for the 12-hour timer and the 2 speed fan. Plus, there a large LED digital display that lets you know your humidity setting without straining your eyes.

In addition, you can use the continuous flow option or decide to use the 13.3 pint water bucket to dispense of that excess moisture. There is a splash guard just in case the bucket does not exit the device smoothly.

After you have it all set up and in the room you want to use this dehumidifier in, you should be pleased to know that the device should work in temperatures as low as 41 degrees F. it is a great unit for most homes

When you need to cover a large area you will find that the LG dehumidifier does the job better than expected. Then with its splash guard, this unit protects your home from spills. That is a good feature when you empty the water tank by hand

FFAP7033T1 dehumidifier review

Built in pumps are available in some dehumidifier models and the FFAP7033T1 is one of them. You should be aware this dehumidifier looks a lot similar to the FFAD7033R1, as it is the built in pump version of our best pick FFAD7033R1.

Castor wheels makes moving this dehumidifier from room to room a lot easier. Once in the new room, this unit should remove about 70 pints of moisture. But that is not the best feature. Its internal condensate pump makes sure you can continuously remove that moisture even if you have to go up to do it

Also, there are easy to use controls that help you set the 24 hour timer, the fan speed and the humidity level you want to live in. A just over 13 pint water tank gives you a water removal option.

This handy little mini dehumidifier handles a 150 square foot or 1200 cubic foot room with ease. It will remove about 9 ounces of moisture each day and has a 16 ounce water tank. The easy to use on and off switch just takes a slight push of your finger.

Plus, you get an auto shut off function that will automatically shut the unit off when the water tank is full. Then the front-loading water tank simply pulls out and you can walk it to your sink.

The whisper technology inside keeps the motor ultimately quiet and should not disturb you when you are trying to relax in the bath. As an added feature it should remove odors and bacteria as it works.

The auto shut off function kicks in when the 16 ounce water tank is full.
This unit is a reliable dehumidifier for bathroom without vent.

8 Important Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dehumidifier

You just do not want to rush out and buy any old dehumidifier just because your home has become unbearably sticky and moist. There are things you need to consider before you purchase to make sure you are getting the right unit.

Our research shows that these are the most important factors in shopping for a dehumidifier:

  • Capacity - of course, this is one of the most important factors determining the best dehumidifier according to the U.S Department of Energy.
  • Energy Star label - a good dehumidifier has to be certified for energy efficiency by Energy Star. Because when living in a humid climate, we need to run the dehumidifier continuously, not in just one day. Moreover, this is one of the two standards making a good dehumidifier.
  • Automatic features - this includes stop, restart and defrost. You want to make sure all your bases are covered, and your unit is protected.
  • Timers - a 24-hour timer is important to stay in control of your dehumidifying process. A sleep timer is also good, so you do not have to use electricity while you sleep
  • Drain system - water buckets are standard and good. But you have better things t do with your time than empty water buckets. Make sure the dehumidifier has a continuous drain feature and that it accepts a standard size garden hose. An internal pump is a plus but not always needed.
  • Indicator lights - you want them for the water bucket, the air filter, and other features
  • Fan seed - one speed is not enough
  • Air Filters - they need to be located in the right spots for easy removal and replacement. Washable ones are the best as they save you money
  • Warranty - walk-in warranties are not the best. Read the fine print so you know what is covered and what isn’t. The longer the warranty the better
  • Noise levels - you should need to buy a dehumidifier that has a low noise level. It is very important to make sure that the device will not disturb your everyday life.
  • Price - don’t spend too much and go over budget. Find the unit that you can afford. You can always save up over time to upgrade later on.

What We Found

During our research period, we found many things about these dehumidifiers and dehumidifiers in general:

  • First, one size does not fit all. Many dehumidifiers although the same size, they do not cover the same total area. That means you have to be careful when purchasing your unit.
  • Second, most dehumidifiers, including the 70-pint, come with the same basic features. Competition is so tough that manufacturers are making sure you get enough features for the amount of money you spend on their product. You are not going to be shortchanged if you pick the most reliable dehumidifier in the 70-pint per day range.
  • Third, unless it is a special deal, you are not going to get a drain hose included with your purchase. You need to make sure that you have a standard garden hose to fit the continuous drain connector. If you don’t then you need to spend more money to buy a new garden hose. If you do not have a drain or a garden, this may be a problem. You may be stuck using emptying the water bucket every time it gets filled.
  • Last but not least, using a dehumidifier can result in dry skin. To avoid that issue, you should learn how to size a dehumidifier correctly and set the indoor humidity level in an appropriate range.

A Little Advice

We take our job reviewing and monitoring products seriously. We want to make sure that you are aware of the best products on the market. This is because we are like you. We do not want to waste our money on inferior products.

We want to get the biggest bang for our buck every time we buy a new appliance, television set or dehumidifier. We do not want to buy a cheap dehumidifier and find it won’t meet our needs.

Important Factors of Perfect Dehumidifier

We want to make sure our money is not wasted so we look to review and research the top-rated dehumidifiers, so you do not waste time in your search or your money. Here are some words of advice:

  • Don’t keep up with the Joneses - in other words, if your friends or family members have a great dehumidifier, don’t rush out and buy the same model. You may not be able to afford it and it may not be right for your home
  • Do your research - don’t take our word for it. Do your own research so you get the right one for your home and at the right price
  • Expensive is not always best - This is the key. People think you have to pay more to get the better product. That is not necessarily true. Sometimes a cheaper model will last you a long time and work very well
  • Watch the warranties - the fine print says it all and you need to be careful. Don’t scan the fine print as those contain the loopholes the companies use to get out of honoring their word
  • Make sure you get what you want - do not let any salesman talk you into buying the wrong dehumidifier. They only care about getting your money into their wallet. Know what to look for and stick to those guidelines

Final Words

Living in humid environments is a nightmare and buying a dehumidifier is not fun and games. It actually takes a little hard work to make sure you get the right unit for your home and needs. Also, there's many trusted dehumidifier manufacturers for you to choose from such as DanbyFrigidaireSoleus AirIvationKeystone... When your home or region becomes too hot and sticky, you want to make sure you have the most reliable dehumidifier on your side, working for you.

Out of the 5 top rated dehumidifiers reviewed above, we chose the Frigidaire FFAD7033R1 70 Pint Dehumidifier. It had a larger water bucket than most, a large square foot rating and it had all the features we wanted to see in a dehumidifier.

If you are looking for great dehumidifiers for your needs, you can also see it here.

Our research showed that while the competitors were good, this one just stood out. Of course, you may disagree with us, but that is okay. The best dehumidifier for mold and mildew award is not infallible. Different units may perform better in real life settings outside our labs.

Getting rid of excessive moisture is a never ending battle and keeping air conditioners running is not enough to fight against these enemies. Go with the dehumidifier that works for you and meets all your criteria.

  4. I’m looking for a dehumidifier for my basement which was completely finished but, due to flooding caused by a sump pump failure, is now down to the bare block. When I removed the drywall, I noticed that the block was sweating. I have not replaced the drywall because I’m afraid the block will start sweating again. The tile floor constantly looks damp. The space is not that large – around 400 sq ft. Which brand and model would you recommend? Thanks.

  6. The total dimensions of my basement is 20 by 50 with a wall in the middle. I want to set up the dehumidifier to just dump the access moisture in the air right into my sump pump. My current dehumidifier works that way, but sometimes the moisture is so bad that is fills up the tank on the dehumidifier. I’m not sure exactly why that happens, but I want a dehumidifier that does not do that because once it is full, it shuts down and I start growing mold in my basement.

  7. Looking for a reliable dehumidifier for a large basement. Not looking to use drain, more concerned about bucket size and not freezing up the coils.I know their are many choices. Any thoughts on what might be a good choice and most durable.

    Thanks

  8. Hello, last year I had my ac unit upgraded. Since that time, I notice condensation on my windows during the summer when running the ac. I also notice that sometime even though the thermostat says its cool that it doesn’t feel cool. I have researched and it sounds like I might need a dehumidifier. By putting a portable one in my basement, will that help with the entire house?

  9. I have read your information carefully.

Having said that: For a newer 450 sq. ft. RV (but a park model that doesn’t move) mounted in a very rainy environment and infrequently used is a Frigidaire 70 pint model still recommended or is a Frigidaire 30 pint ok. The RV is left unheated when not in use. The unit will use the drain hose due our long absences.

    Thank you.

  10. Please answer David’s question above: “Looking for a reliable dehumidifier for a large basement. Not looking to use drain, more concerned about bucket size and not freezing up the coils.I know their are many choices. Any thoughts on what might be a good choice and most durable.”

I’m looking for the same thing, but would like to have the drain option as well.

    Am I being too picky??

  11. I have a 2 story home with a finished (and relatively dry) basement. It is a square with about 600 sq feet on each floor. I only have a dehumidifier in the basement – but the whole house is air conditioned. You say that a 70 pt dehumindifier is capable of servicing a 4500 sq ft home. 1) Would this be true in a situation like mine – or does the 4500 sq ft have to be on the same floor? 2) Also, I’d like to put the dehumidifier in the utility closet where the furnace and water softener are as well. There is a standard air intake for this room as well as some gaps under the folding closet doors. This location is ideal because it is near a floor drain thereby allowing continuous running and no dumping of buckets; however, I am not sure if there is enough air circulation behind the closed doors. Thoughts?

    Thanks!
