What is a Mold Fogger?

what is Mold fogger

There’s more to mold than the eyes can see, and by that we mean of course, literally!

Molds are made up of spores, and these are microscopic allergens that can affect air quality. These mold spores are the beginning of mold growth and must be removed completely for any chance of removing and preventing mold altogether.

Mold foggers are devices used to turn the usual mold control concentrate to a thick fog by creating microns from size 1 to 100. The smaller the microns are, the better! Smaller microns can reach harder-to-reach spaces.

Mold foggers are typically used to solve mold problems in large spaces, contrary to a spray’s more targeted and more time-consuming solution.

Is Mold Fogging Effective?

Mold foggers aren’t an all-in-one mold solution. You need to make sure of the following first if you want them to be more effective:

  • Find where the leak is. If there’s visible mold, there’s definitely a water or moisture leak somewhere.
  • Dry out areas that are wet. Mold problems in constantly wet areas are common, so drying out wet area before the treatment can dramatically reduce the chance of recurrence.
  • Remove the affected material. Whether it’s a part of a wall, a whole cabinet, ceiling tiles, carpet, or anything else, remove it so it doesn’t cause mold regrowth.

You might be wondering why you’d need to do all this. Again, mold fogging isn’t an all-in-one solution, and that’s because of this very simple reason: They may not be able to clear away active molds.

All we’re trying to say is that mold foggers are very effective in preventing mold regrowth and they can be an essential part of mold remediation, but they may not be able to get rid of mold if it’s already there. Dead spores may also still cause allergic reactions, and mold fogging doesn’t get rid of these as well.

Anyway, after all of this is done, use the mold fogger for crawl space, large areas, or any affected part of the home. Foggers used for mold remediation can either be stationary, which are used to cover entire rooms, or handheld for smaller spaces.

Where Can We Use Mold Foggers?

There are hundreds of mold foggers in the market, and we all just need one that does the job. We need one that can remove mold from different parts of the house, such as:

  • Basements, cellars, and attics
  • Bathrooms
  • Crawl spaces and roof spaces
  • Garages and sheds
  • Decks and patios

Longray Basic ULV Fogger with Adjustable Flow & Flex-Hose Review

This handheld ULV fogger made it to this list with its sheer power, effectiveness, and price. It also weighs just about 4kg, so it’s easy to carry around as well.

Many foggers within this Longray fogger’s price range are actually misters instead of foggers, but this one is an actual fogger that can produce microns of sizes 5 to 50.

It comes with a 20-inch hose that can help you fog harder to reach and very small areas, and an easy-to-clean lightweight solution tank that you can fill with about 300mL of disinfectant, mold, pesticide, insecticide solution.

A user who lives next to a stream and has been dealing with molds in his musty basement stands by this Longray fogger.

What We Liked

  • Can be used to fog nooks and crannies
  • Can be used for fungicide, pesticide, disinfectant, and more
  • Can be set to spray fine mist, fog, or droplets with a few twists of a knob

What We Didn't Like

  • Can’t be used statically, because the unit tumbles over as soon as the tank empties
  • Tube that comes with the unit is a bit short and prone to breakage
  • Motor can be very loud, making it difficult to handle

How Do You Use a Mold Fogger?

Hundreds of YouTube videos are dedicated to showing just how mold foggers work, but it’s quite easy to do. Here’s how:

1

Step 1 - Clear the room

Mold foggers atomize oil-based and water-based solutions, and items may get damaged if subjected to thick mist or fog. Remove electronics, beddings, paintings, and clothing especially.

2

Step 2 - Put in your mold solution of choice

The size of the rooms you’re treating depends on how much solution you’ll need. Foggers coat entire rooms evenly with the solution, so you might want to get more than you think you need.

3

Step 3 - Adjust your mist setting

Some foggers have mist settings and some do not. Others can shoot up to 20ft into the air for higher ceilings, while others can mist smaller areas like crawl spaces.

4

Step 4 - Start fogging

Let the fogger do its job and leave it on just until it coats the entire room. You’ll know that you’ve let it run for too long when the solution actually starts to run or pool, so you have to turn it off just before this happens.

Note: If you’re using a handheld fogger and need to be in the room, always wear a respirator so you don’t inhale the fumes. Never allow pets and children in a room that’s being fogged.

5

Step 5 - Let it sit

After you turn off the fogger, you might want to allow the fog about 30 minutes to settle in.

6

Step 6 - Dry it out

The room may be a little damp, so open your windows and turn on the fans, then dry out the room completely.

Final Words

Getting a mold removal fogger to remove mold and mildew is a great idea, and we recommend Createch USA Tri Jet ULV Non-Thermal Fogger.

Though the other foggers in this review are also good at what they do, the Tri Jet trumps them with its durability and effectiveness. It’s a powerful cold fogger that gets the job done in no time. We all agree that the 5-year manufacturer’s warranty is just the icing on top!

They say "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Installing a whole house dehumidifier, or at least a portable dehumidifier, can help you prevent mold from growing at the first stage especially if you are living in a humid climate like we are in Florida.
